A 24-year-old man has died after he and a second person were critically injured in a crash that left four others hospitalized in North Chicago Sunday evening.
The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 8:10 p.m. Sunday to the 1400 block of Grove Avenue in North Chicago for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Emergency crews arrived and found two vehicles involved in a collision with six people injured, North Chicago Fire Department Battalion Chief Kim Schaefer said.
Additional ambulances from fire departments in the surrounding area were requested.
Two ambulances from the North Chicago Fire Department, along with an ambulance each from the Waukegan, Libertyville, Lake Forest and Beach Park fire departments, responded to the crash, Schaefer said.
All six people were transported to area hospitals.
Two were transported in critical condition, while the other four suffered moderate injuries and were transported in stable condition, Schaefer said.
One of the two critically injured, identified as Giovanni Robinson, 24, died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville on Monday afternoon, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
Banek said Robinson died while in the intensive care unit. He was most recently a North Chicago resident but previously resided in Merrillville, Indiana.
A preliminary coroner’s investigation indicated Robinson died from blunt force injuries from the vehicle collision, Banek said.
The two vehicles involved were a 1984 GMC Suburban and a Chevrolet Silverado.
The GMC sustained heavy damage to its driver’s side.
A dump trailer was also involved in the crash.
Two tow trucks from Unique Towing responded and removed both vehicles.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Chicago Police Department.
