Firefighters assisted a worker outside after large machines caught on fire and began spreading inside a manufacturing plant in McHenry early Tuesday morning.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 3 a.m. Tuesday to Chroma Color Corporation, 3900 Dayton Street in McHenry, for a report of a commercial structure fire.

Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find a large, one-story industrial building with moderate smoke coming from several doors.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Kevin Sears said workers exiting the building reported that someone was still inside.

Firefighters quickly located and removed the person from the building while fire suppression activities were taking place.

Sears said two large machines were on fire in the middle of the plant floor.

The fire was spreading through ductwork along the ceiling.

The fire was contained and fire crews worked to remove smoke for an hour after extinguishment, Sears said.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level, which brought assistance to the scene from Round Lake, Wonder Lake, Nunda Rural, Woodstock, Crystal Lake and Wauconda fire departments.

The MABAS 8 Mobile Ventilation Unit also responded to assist with removing smoke from the building.

Several fire departments staffed McHenry fire stations while crews worked at the scene.

No occupants or firefighters were injured during the incident, Sears said.

A damage estimate was not immediately available. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
