A male in his late teenage years was left to die in the roadway after he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle in Waukegan early Sunday morning.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 12:45 a.m. Sunday to the area of Belvidere Road and Fulton Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Emergency crews arrived to find a male victim who had been ran over by a vehicle, which fled the scene.
The unresponsive victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said the victim was riding a bicycle when he was struck.
Newton said Tuesday the victim’s identity has not been confirmed yet. He was believed to be in his late teenage years.
An autopsy was performed on Tuesday by the coroner’s office.
Investigators were on the scene for several hours investigating the hit-and-run, which left the victim deceased in the middle of Belvidere Road.
Officers shut down Belvidere Road between Elmwood Avenue and Glen Rock Avenue.
Chastain said Tuesday that investigators are making progress on the case and additional information is expected to be released soon.
