A Rockford man has been sentenced to six years in prison for selling fentanyl to a 30-year-old woman, causing her overdose death in Woodstock, prosecutors said.
RJ T. Marinas, 35, of Rockford, was charged in December 2022 with one count of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said that Marinas delivered a substance containing fentanyl to a woman on June 4, 2022, in Rockford.
The woman, Cassandra E. Tomassi, 30, of Belvidere, inhaled a portion of the substance into her body.
She was found dead the next day at a recovery home in Woodstock, the complaint and prosecutors said.
A forensic pathologist determined that her death was caused by the fentanyl provided to her by Marinas, prosecutors said.
The case was investigated by the Woodstock Police Department and charges were filed several months later following the investigation.
Marinas was taken into the custody of the McHenry County Jail in February 2023.
An obituary for Tomassi said she graduated from Belvidere High School in 2009.
She enjoyed being outdoors and exploring nature. Tomassi liked hiking, kayaking and rock collecting, her obituary said.
Marinas was initially ordered held on a $1 million bond but was later released pre-trial in September 2023.
Court records show Marinas entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry Country State’s Attorney’s Office last week.
He pleaded guilty to the charge against him and was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by McHenry County Judge Tiffany Davis pursuant to the agreement.
Marinas will serve the sentence at 75% and receive 235 days of credit for time served. He will additionally receive 39 days of credit for engaging in a self-improvement program or volunteer work.
