A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for an Antioch home invasion where he was armed with a baseball bat and injured a woman before being tased by police.
The Antioch Police Department responded around 9:53 p.m. on February 23, 2023, to a residence in the Oakwood Knolls subdivision in Antioch for an open line 911 call.
Dispatchers could hear a man and a woman yelling in the background, then-Village of Antioch Communication Manager Jim Moran told Lake and McHenry County Scanner at the time.
Officers arrived and were alerted by the woman inside that a man in the home had a weapon.
Officers entered the home and encountered a male suspect, identified as Nicholas Summers, 43, of Antioch, armed with a baseball bat.
Summers was not compliant and refused all orders from the police officers, Moran said.
Moran said that Summers then attempted to retreat into the home where the woman was still inside.
“Believing the male intended to cause harm to the female, officers engaged the male and subsequently took him into custody after being forced to Tase him to comply,” Moran said.
An investigation determined that the woman had an active order of protection against Summers, with whom she was involved in a previous relationship.
Summers and the female victim, who was battered, were both transported to the hospital.
Antioch Police Chief Geoffrey Guttschow praised the actions of the responding officers.
“If not for the actions of the responding officers, I fear this incident would have ended in a tragic outcome,” Guttschow said following Summers’ arrest.
Summers was charged with home invasion, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, criminal trespass to residence domestic battery and violating an order of protection.
Court records show Summers entered into a negotiated plea deal with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office last month.
He pleaded guilty on October 10 to one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony, in exchange for the rest of his charges being dismissed.
Summers was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) pursuant to the plea.
He will receive credit for 619 days of time spent in custody awaiting trial.
IDOC records show Summers is projected to be paroled in July 2026.
