Nearly a dozen fire departments were called after a fire caused $125,000 in damage to a vacant home under renovation in Grayslake Saturday evening.

The Grayslake Fire District responded around 9:55 p.m. Saturday to the 400 block of South Lake Street for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes to find a working fire in a vacant single-story, single-family residence, according to Grayslake Fire District Lt. Ross Guerin.

Flames were showing from the soffit area of the roof.

Guerin said fire crews extinguished the exterior fire but found the fire had extended into the attic area of the home.

The home was found to have multiple roof additions, which made locating and extinguishing the fire difficult.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level, Guerin said.

The upgrade prompted the response of numerous fire departments from surrounding communities to assist in extinguishing the fire.

Guerin said the fire was extinguished around 11 p.m. There were no injuries reported.

The home, which neighbors said was recently purchased and under renovation, sustained an estimated $125,000 worth of damage.

Firefighters from Round Lake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Newport, Countryside, Fox Lake, Wauconda and Spring Grove assisted at the scene.

The Antioch, Waukegan, Lake Bluff, Long Grove and Wheeling fire departments covered calls in Grayslake during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Guerin added.
