The sheriff’s office is warning residents in McHenry County about phone scammers impersonating the sheriff’s office in an attempt to steal money from callers.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that they have been notified of a phone scam targeting local residents using an 815 area code number.
Scammers are using the names of real employees at the sheriff’s office and ask people to call back urgently.
Scammers might claim there is a warrant out for the caller’s arrest or that they missed a jury summons, sheriff’s officials said.
The scammers then continue to press for personal information and ask for payment.
Sheriff’s officials said police will never contact people by phone claiming they have a warrant or asking for payment.
Anyone who receives a scam call is recommended to hang up the phone.
Residents are also urged to talk to their elderly friends and family about the scams since they are the most affected demographic.
