Prosecutors say multiple guns were recovered and a convicted felon was arrested after a car fled from officers during a traffic stop in Waukegan.
Tyshawn U. King, 25, of Round Lake, was charged with felon in possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, illegal transportation of alcohol, disregarding a traffic control light, failure to obey a stop sign, improper traffic lane usage and fleeing attempting to elude an officer.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kailey Hopkins said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in Waukegan on November 8.
The vehicle had committed multiple traffic violations, including disregarding a traffic light, failing to stop at a stop sign and improper traffic lane usage.
King initially stopped the vehicle, which was occupied by four subjects, Hopkins said.
Hopkins said King then sped off from the traffic stop and the vehicle was located shortly after.
King was walking away from the vehicle and the three other occupants had already fled.
Hopkins said an odor of cannabis was coming from the vehicle and an open bottle of alcohol was in plain view. 51 grams of cannabis was found in a backpack in the car.
King, who was in possession of the car’s keys, told police that there was ammunition in the car, Hopkins said. 50 rounds of live ammunition were found.
King is a convicted felon and does not have a Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license.
Police used a canine to track the car from where it fled from officers.
Three handguns were recovered in the street where King had driven, Hopkins said.
Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim granted a petition to detain King pending trial after finding there were no conditions of release to mitigate the threat he poses to the community.
The judge said King has prior weapons offenses and warrants for failure to appear in court.
King is scheduled to appear in court again on December 11 for a preliminary hearing.
