A family says a driver hit their dog with a vehicle and fled the scene, leaving the dog on the side of the road with major injuries near Marengo.

Alexandra Garcia told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday along West Coral Road in unincorporated Marengo.

The family’s dog, Daisy, was on her leash on their property when the collar broke loose and she ran into the road.

Daisy was struck by a vehicle and left in the ditch to die.

Garcia said her sister arrived at the home and found Daisy with major injuries.

“When we went to go get her we thought she was dead as it was a gruesome scene,” Garcia said.

The family rushed the dog to Companion Animal Specialty and Emergency in Crystal Lake.

The veterinarian reported Daisy had a fracture in the area of her shoulder and leg that required surgery to repair.

Daisy also suffered other injuries and surgery was scheduled for Monday but has been delayed as she was not stable enough.

“We have so many medical bills coming in and also hoping this is possibly bringing awareness of selfish people hitting animals and not checking on them as this was an obvious hit and run of a dog,” Garcia said.

The family has no details on the possible suspect vehicle that struck the dog.

They have created a GoFundMe account to help raise money for the veterinarian bills, which they predict will be over $10,000.

Daisy remains under the care of the animal hospital.

Garcia said her family cannot bear to see Daisy suffering and that Daisy is a “very loving and friendly dog” with two children, ages three and eight, who love her.
