Fire officials say the residents were able to escape safely after a chimney fire caused minor damage to their home near Huntley Tuesday evening.
The Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 7:04 p.m. Tuesday to the 12500 block of Grandview Drive in unincorporated Huntley for a report of a structure fire.
Huntley Fire Protection District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said the homeowners reported that fire was visible coming from their chimney.
Firefighters arrived within eight minutes and found flames showing from the chimney of a two-story residence.
All occupants were unharmed and had evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival.
Firefighters quickly deployed ladders to access the rooftop while additional crews entered the home to check for fire spread, Vucha said.
The fire was extinguished just before 7:30 p.m. and fire crews remained on the scene for approximately an hour for cleanup and investigation.
Vucha said the fire was contained to the masonry chimney.
The house sustained minor smoke damage but remains habitable.
“The Huntley Fire Protection District encourages residents to have their chimneys inspected and cleaned annually by a certified professional to reduce the risk of chimney fires,” fire officials said.
“Creosote buildup and blockages are common causes of these types of fires and can be prevented with routine care,” officials added.
Firefighters from Huntley, Woodstock, Algonquin, Union, Marengo and Pingree Grove assisted at the scene.
