Editor’s Note: The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has clarified that Anthony Craven was a resident of McHenry, Mississippi, not McHenry, Illinois as initially indicated.

Authorities say a 28-year-old man from McHenry died after he was stabbed multiple times while he was committing a home invasion at a motel in Cook County.

The Prospect Heights Police Department responded around 2:02 a.m. on November 17 to a 911 call at Motel 6, 540 North Milwaukee Avenue, for a report of a battery.

Prospect Heights Deputy Police Chief Milorad Derman said officers arrived and found an adult male victim suffering from a stab wound.

Officers performed lifesaving measures but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Anthony B. Craven, 28, of McHenry.

Officers detained four subjects who were involved in the incident, Derman said.

Prospect Heights police detectives, along with the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT), initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the homicide.

Derman said in an update earlier this week that the agencies completed the investigation.

Officers arrested Remington Carroll, 23, of Mississippi, and he appeared in court on Tuesday.

Carroll was charged with home invasion resulting in injury, a Class X felony.

Derman said that Carroll and his friends, including Craven, were staying at the Motel 6.

They were loud in the hallway and awoke a man, who asked them to be quiet.

Derman said Carroll and his friends engaged in a verbal altercation in the hallway with the man.

Carroll was seen holding a beer bottle and the other man believed he would be attacked.

The man, to protect himself, took out a pocket knife and returned to his room before closing the door, Derman said.

Derman said Carroll and his friends, including Craven, kicked the hotel guest’s door and demanded he come out.

When the guest opened the door, Carroll and his friends rushed in, Derman said.

Craven entered first and Arroyo stabbed him in the stomach.

During the struggle, Carroll was stabbed in the hand, which allowed the hotel guest to shut the door.

The adult male hotel guest involved suffered injuries to his hands during the encounter, Derman said.

Craven, who was stabbed in the stomach, later died from his injuries in the hallway. An autopsy showed he died from multiple sharp force injuries.

The Prospect Heights Police Department and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office determined that the hotel guest acted in self-defense and charges are not being filed against him.
