A sleeping resident was awoken by their working smoke detectors to a fire that left their house uninhabitable in Lake Zurich Tuesday evening, fire officials said.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 10:35 p.m. Tuesday to the 0-100 block of Red Haw Lane for a report of a structure fire.

Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Chief David Pilgard said fire crews arrived on the scene in three minutes to find smoke and flames coming from the attached garage of a residence.

Smoke was also coming out of the living quarters of the home.

Pilgard said the incident was upgraded to the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) for additional resources to respond.

A resident had gone to bed but woke up to their smoke detectors activated, Pilgard said.

Smoke was visible throughout the residence and they immediately called 911 and evacuated.

Firefighters had water on the fire in the garage within two minutes and the fire was extinguished in five minutes, Pilgard said.

The fire required extensive overhaul operations of the home. Everyone was accounted for in the home.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, which originated at the rear side of the garage.

Pilgard said it was important that the residence had working smoke detectors that alerted the occupants to the fire.

The home was deemed uninhabitable and the residents were being assisted with alternative living arrangements.
