Officers arrested a 36-year-old man accused of pulling a loaded gun out, waving it around and pointing it at a patron inside a liquor store in North Chicago.
Kevaun F. North, 36, of North Chicago, was charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The North Chicago Police Department responded to Teepee Liquors & Food Mart, 1801 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in North Chicago, on November 9 for a report of an armed subject waving a gun around.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Theis said the 911 caller reported a man pulled a gun out and pointed it at his brother.
Officers arrived and found the suspect, identified as North, standing inside the liquor store.
Theis said North began walking away from officers and started shuffling through his pockets.
North was detained by officers who searched him and found a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson firearm in his bag, Theis said. The gun had a round in the chamber and a loaded magazine inserted.
Surveillance video showed North pulling out a gun and waving it around at patrons in the store. At one point, he pointed the gun at another patron, Theis said.
North does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license.
North was on pre-trial release for a prior arrest out of North Chicago. He also had two active arrest warrants out of Georgia.
One warrant was for a weapons offense and the other was for failing to appear in court.
North also has a weapon offense conviction in Wisconsin as well as DUI and obstructing convictions, Theis said.
Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim granted a petition filed by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office to detain North pending trial.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 10.
