Forecasters say a powerful arctic cold front is sweeping across the Chicagoland area along with gusty snow showers Wednesday that could produce 50 mph winds.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said Wednesday that the cold front will sweep across the area Wednesday afternoon with gusty snow showers and snow squalls in its wake.

The timing window for the heaviest snow squalls in McHenry County is 2-6 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. in Lake County.

Scattered heavier snow showers and squalls will produce brief bursts of snow accompanied by high winds, the NWS said.

Gusts up to 50 mph or greater are possible and will cause sharply reduced visibility and localized slippery travel.

The NWS said snow shower activity will persist into Wednesday evening as temperatures plummet well below freezing, which may continue to cause travel impacts.

Snowfall totals are expected to remain mainly below an inch across the area but snow or slush-covered roads are expected.

Motorists are recommended to slow down and increase following distance when driving.

Motorists should also prepare for extra travel time during the evening commute, the NWS added.
