Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire that broke out in the basement of a house near Huntley before it was able to spread, officials said.

The Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday to the 11800 block of Strawberry Lane in unincorporated Huntley.

Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Brian Harders said crews initially responded to a call of an inside smoke investigation after the caller reported smoke in the basement.

The residents were home at the home and evacuated after their smoke detectors were activated.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and upgraded the response after finding an active fire with smoke coming from the basement, Harders said.

The first fire crew conducted an interior attack to quickly extinguish the fire.

The fire damaged a sump pump, a ride-on toy and a small bookshelf. It did not spread further, Harders said.

Harders said the home remains habitable as there was very little damage due to firefighters quickly extinguishing the fire.
