State police say a man died after he suffered critical injuries when he was struck by an SUV while walking across traffic on Route 53 near Long Grove and Palatine.
The Illinois State Police, Arlington Heights Fire Department and Palatine Fire Department responded around 4:56 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 53 and Lake Cook Road for a report of a person down in the roadway.
Troopers with Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 3 arrived and found the incident occurred in the northbound lanes of Route 53 just south of Lake Cook Road.
A preliminary investigation showed a gray Tesla Model Y SUV struck a pedestrian.
The pedestrian, a 37-year-old Wheeling man, was struck by the Tesla while he was walking across the live lanes of travel, ISP said.
Paramedics arrived and found the man was unconscious and not breathing.
Paramedics began performing CPR and lifesaving measures before transporting him to Endeavor Health Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
ISP said the pedestrian was later pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.
Troopers shut down lanes of northbound Route 53 and reopened the lanes around 8:15 p.m.
ISP said it is unknown if any injuries were reported by occupants of the Tesla or if the driver remained at the scene.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is in the process of conducting an autopsy on the victim.
The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police, which said further information was not immediately available.
