A man was left trapped in a tractor after a utility pole collapsed onto him and brought down power lines near Marengo Monday evening, fire officials said.

The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts responded around 5:07 p.m. Monday to the 20400 block of Kishwaukee Valley Road in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a tractor incident involving a trapped person.

Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said fire crews arrived to find an adult male in the driver’s seat of a medium-sized tractor.

He was pinned under a collapsed utility pole and the pole brought down electrical wires.

The situation posed a potential hazard and firefighters proceeded with caution while awaiting ComEd to respond to confirm the lines were de-energized, Vucha said.

Vucha said it appeared the tractor had struck a guide wire, causing the utility pole to topple over.

ComEd crews arrived shortly after and confirmed the power to the lines had been disconnected.

Firefighters worked to free the man from under the utility pole once the scene was declared safe.

Vucha said it is believed the man had been trapped for approximately 45 minutes before being discovered by a family member.

Paramedics evaluated the man at the scene. He reported no injuries and was not transported to the hospital.

“Given the totality of the situation, this was the best outcome possible,” Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts Chief John Kimmel said.

“Our training and teamwork were critical to achieving a positive outcome in this incident. We are glad he is back home and healthy,” Kimmel said.
