Seven fire departments were called and residents were left displaced after a fire broke out in a townhouse near Deerfield Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 8 a.m. Wednesday to the 400 block of Swan Boulevard in unincorporated Deerfield for a report of smoke in the building.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Steve McCaughey said an occupant reported smoke in his home and evacuated.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke showing and they entered the home to investigate.

Fire crews found a working fire in the basement of the home and the incident was upgraded, McCaughey said.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate are still under investigation.
