Residents were awoken by smoke detectors and were able to escape after a fire broke out and left their home uninhabitable in Island Lake Friday evening.

The Wauconda Fire District responded and Island Lake Police Department around 11:30 p.m. Friday to the 3000 block of Mallard Point in Island Lake for a report of a structure fire.

Wauconda Fire District Division Chief Mike DaValle said firefighters arrived on the scene in four minutes and found smoke showing from the garage of a two-story house.

The residents were home at the time and were woken up by their smoke alarms.

They escaped the home without injury, DaValle said. No firefighters reported any injuries either.

Damage was estimated at approximately $100,000. DaValle said the cause of the fire was ruled accidental in nature.

The residence was deemed uninhabitable due to fire, smoke and water damage until repairs and restoration can be performed.

“The Wauconda Fire District would like to remind residents to ensure your smoke alarms are installed and working properly,” DaValle said.

The Lake Zurich, Nunda Rural, Grayslake, Cary, Barrington, Barrington Countryside and McHenry fire departments assisted at the scene. Mundelein and Buffalo Grove fire departments covered Wauconda’s fire stations.
