A winter weather advisory is in effect for McHenry County for a wintry mix bringing possible freezing rain that could cause slippery road conditions.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for McHenry, Boone, DeKalb, Lee, Ogle and Winnebago counties in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.

The NWS said precipitation will continue to spread into the area from the west on Saturday afternoon.

A wintry mix is expected initially before a transition to all rain is likely.

Colder pavement temperatures will allow for a glaze of ice to develop on sidewalks and some roads in the counties under the advisory despite air temperatures being mostly above freezing, the NWS said.

“This is due to the initially very cold pavement temperatures being slower to rise above freezing than the air temperatures,” the NWS said.

People are urged to use caution if traveling through or walking outside in the afternoon and evening.

Total ice accumulations from a light glaze up to a tenth of an inch, the advisory said.

The highest potential for freezing rain and locally icy roads and sidewalks is northwest of a Mendota to Crystal Lake line.

Patchy dense fog is also possible on Saturday evening, mainly after midnight.
