A woman who spat on two sheriff’s deputies and bragged about having a disease while at the police station in Lakemoor has been sentenced to court supervision.
A Lake County sheriff’s lieutenant was on patrol around 10 p.m. on January 3, 2023, near Volo Village Road and Route 12 in Volo.
The lieutenant noticed a vehicle in the ditch near the entrance to Fish Lake Beach, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
As the lieutenant started getting closer, he witnessed the driver back the vehicle out of the ditch and strike a utility pole.
The lieutenant spoke to the driver of the vehicle, identified as Kiara Pearson, 34, of Grayslake.
Pearson was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was arrested, Covelli said.
Pearson was initially transported to the Lakemoor Police Department for processing.
Covelli said Pearson spat at two sheriff’s deputies, striking them both in the face with her spit, while being processed.
Pearson then bragged that she had a communicable disease, Covelli said.
Pearson was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Both sheriff’s deputies were evaluated at a local hospital.
Court records show Pearson entered into a negotiated plea deal with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office last month.
She pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence and an amended count of battery, both Class A misdemeanors.
Pearson was sentenced to 12 months of court supervision and 30 hours of public service for both counts.
She was also ordered to not consume alcohol, obtain an evaluation and attend a program related to the offense.
If Pearson complies with the sentence, the conviction will not be entered on her record.
