A Lake in the Hills woman and her child were injured after a head-on crash that left a husband and wife dead in Kane County, authorities said.

The Wayne Police Department said they responded around 6:36 p.m. last Sunday to a vehicle crash with injuries on Dunham Road south of Stearns Road in Wayne.

Officers found that a 2001 Toyota Corolla and a 2017 Toyota Highlander had collided.

An investigation showed the Toyota Corolla, driven by Felix Mendoza Urbieta, 45, of Elgin, was traveling southbound on Dunham Road, police officials said Friday.

The Toyota Corolla crossed over the double yellow centerline and collided with a northbound Toyota Highlander, driven by a 45-year-old Lake in the Hills woman.

Members of the Fox River Countryside Fire Rescue District responded to the scene to provide medical attention.

Police officials said Mendoza Urbieta suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

His wife, Noemi Apolinar Huerta, 44, who was in the front seat passenger of the Toyota Corolla, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 45-year-old driver of the Toyota Highlander and her 12-year-old daughter, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office was notified of the deaths.

Mendoza Urbieta and Apolinar Huerta were transported to the Kane County Coroner’s Office morgue and autopsies were conducted on Wednesday.

The autopsies showed the preliminary causes of death to be from multiple injuries due to the vehicle crash, according to the coroner’s office.

Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab for analysis.

“Our condolences to the children and extended family of Mr. Mendoza Urbieta and Mrs. Apolinar Huerta during this time,” Kane County Coroner Dr. Monica Silva and Wayne Police Chief Timothy Roberts said in a joint statement.
