A 34-year-old man died after he crashed his car into a guardrail while exiting the Amstutz Expressway in Waukegan late Sunday evening, authorities said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 11:59 p.m. Sunday to the area of the Amstutz Expressway and Greenwood Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived and found a single-vehicle crash with one person dead.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and recovered the victim.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said the crash involved a Chevrolet Malibu.

The driver, a 34-year-old man from Kenosha, Wisconsin, was the sole occupant in the car, Newton said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until after an autopsy, which is expected to be performed later Monday.

The Chevrolet had been traveling northbound on the Amstutz Expressway exiting at Greenwood Avenue.

The Chevrolet failed to navigate the turn and crashed into the guardrail along Greenwood Avenue.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.

The police department said information regarding the incident is expected to be released later Monday.
