The coroner has released the identity of a 75-year-old man who died after he was ejected from his pickup truck that rolled over during a crash on Interstate 94 near Gurnee Friday afternoon.
An autopsy performed Monday showed that Eric Kott, 75, of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, died as a result of blunt force injuries to the head from a vehicle crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Gurnee Fire Department, Libertyville Fire Department and Illinois State Police responded around 2:30 p.m. Friday to Interstate 94 near Route 21 in Gurnee for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 3 troopers arrived to find a fatal two-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 94 at milepost 10.
A preliminary investigation showed a gray Dodge Ram changed lanes and struck the side of a semi-truck hauling a trailer, according to ISP.
The Dodge, driven by Kott, left the roadway and struck a tollway sign.
The Dodge traveled up an embankment and rolled over, leaving the driver partially ejected from the car, ISP said.
Kott was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger of the Dodge, a 71-year-old woman from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was trapped in the vehicle and extricated by firefighters.
Paramedics transported the woman to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of minor injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck did not report any injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
