A woman was left seriously injured and trapped in her car following a multi-vehicle crash that shut down Route 12 in Lake Zurich for several hours, police said.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 4:15 p.m. Friday to the area of Route 12 and Ela Road for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney said the incident involved three vehicles east of Ela Road in the northbound lanes of Route 12 near the railroad bridge.

An initial investigation showed an 85-year-old Lake Barrington woman was driving a 2013 Toyota RAV4.

The Toyota RAV4 struck a 2024 Hyundai Tucson and a 2019 Toyota Highlander, both of which were stationary, Gaffney said.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4 was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters.

While the investigation was occurring, two different vehicles attempted to drive around the police roadblock, Gaffney said.

One of the drivers, a 64-year-old McHenry man, was arrested for driving under the influence.

The second driver, a 58-year-old Wheeling man, was cited for a petty offense.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Lake Zurich Police Department.
