The coroner has identified a 34-year-old man who died after he crashed his car into a guardrail, leaving him partially ejected, while exiting the Amstutz Expressway in Waukegan Sunday evening.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 11:59 p.m. Sunday to the area of the Amstutz Expressway and Greenwood Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived and found a single-vehicle crash with one person dead, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and recovered the victim.

Chastain said the crash involved a black 2019 Chevrolet Malibu.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said the driver, Quincharles Hayes, 34, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, was the sole occupant in the car.

Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been partially ejected from the car, Banek said.

The Chevrolet had been traveling northbound on the Amstutz Expressway exiting at Greenwood Avenue.

The Chevrolet failed to navigate the turn and crashed into the guardrail along Greenwood Avenue.

An autopsy performed on Hayes showed he died from blunt force injuries to the head and neck as a result of the crash, Banek said.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to the scene to process the scene and conduct an investigation, Chastain said.
