Officials say a rumor about a school active shooter in Zion circulating on social media Tuesday is completely false and no threats have been reported.
Zion-Benton District 126 Chief Human Resources Officer Cynthia Moreno said the district became aware of a false post circulating social media on Tuesday.
The post is in regard to an active shooter in Zion, which Moreno said was information that is untrue.
“There is no immediate threat, and all campus operations are continuing as normal,” Moreno said.
“The safety of our students, staff, and community remains our top priority. We appreciate your attention to this matter and encourage everyone to rely on official school communications for accurate updates,” she added.
The Zion Police Department said in a statement that they are uncertain where the rumors originated.
Police say there have been no incidents and nothing resembling a threat that was reported Tuesday.
“Unfortunately, due to several calls regarding individuals seeing online posts either asking about this or repeating this, it was important to address this as soon as possible,” the department said.
The rumor comes one day after a 15-year-old girl committed a school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, leaving a teacher and a student dead, as well as several others wounded.
