Fire officials are reminding homeowners to have their chimneys inspected and cleaned regularly after a chimney fire broke out at a house in Libertyville Monday evening.

The Libertyville Fire Department responded around 7:15 p.m. Monday to the 400 block of Burdick Street in Libertyville for a report of a structure fire.

Libertyville Fire Chief Michael Pakosta said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls for a report of a fire.

A neighbor across the street reported seeing sparks from a home’s chimney. The residents of the home also called 911.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and saw embers and sparks visible from the chimney, Pakosta said.

Fire crews began working to extinguish the fire in the chimney by spraying water on the top to cool it down.

Pakosta said the homeowners ironically had already scheduled for a chimney sweep to occur, but it was scheduled for a couple of days after the fire had started.

Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 45 minutes to an hour. No fire or smoke damage was reported to the home itself.

Pakosta said water damage was cleaned up and the home remained habitable.

The residents, who evacuated immediately upon calling 911, returned to the home.

No injuries were reported to any residents, pets or firefighters.

Pakosta said it was a “good outcome” as no injuries were reported and the limited damage from the fire.

The fire was not suspicious and was due to build-up in the chimney.

Pakosta said homeowners should have their chimneys inspected and cleaned frequently, either every year or every other year. He said newer homes are not as resilient as older homes.

The Mundelein and Countryside fire departments assisted at the scene. Several other fire departments covered Libertyville stations during the incident.
