A man who was out on bond for attempted murder of a woman who was beaten and left seriously injured has died after officials say he shot himself in Buffalo Grove.
The Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday to the 0-100 block of Old Oak Drive for a well-being check.
Officers responding to the call heard two shots fired from an apartment.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department was called to the scene and staged nearby.
Officers entered the apartment and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
They attempted lifesaving measures and paramedics transported him to Endeavor Health Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where he was pronounced dead.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Paul Woebel, 50, of Buffalo Grove.
The medical examiner’s office said Woebel died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head. His death was ruled a suicide.
Court records show Woebel had been charged in July 2021 with attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery in a public place in Cook County.
The Chicago Police Department said Woebel was arrested on June 7, 2021, in the 3400 block of North Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.
Police said Woebel used a blunt object to strike a 42-year-old woman multiple times in the head and body while she was walking in the 500 block of West Hawthorne Place in Chicago on May 14, 2021.
The local alderman said at the time of the incident that the woman was walking with her child when the offender attacked her with a pipe and stole her purse.
The offender fled the scene and the woman was left with serious injuries, the alderman said. She was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
CWBChicago, citing prosecutors, reported that the victim was Woebel’s ex-wife and that Woebel wore a “Rastafarian wig” disguise while committing the attack.
Woebel yelled expletives at the woman during the attack and said he was going to kill her, prosecutors said.
Woebel was released after posting 10% of a $50,000 bond following his arrest. He later pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Court records show Woebel last appeared in court on November 25 and was set to go on trial before a jury on February 4.
