A man was critically injured and a woman was seriously injured in a multiple-vehicle crash that left a third person injured, a car rolled over and required a medical helicopter to respond near Marengo.
The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:21 p.m. Friday to Route 20 and Thorne Road in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Firefighters arrived to find a serious collision involving four vehicles, one of which was overturned, west of the intersection, according to Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.
All occupants had exited their vehicles prior to the arrival of emergency personnel and no extrication was required.
Vucha said the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to request additional ambulances and manpower due to the number of potential patient transports and the severity of the incident.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was also requested to the scene to provide critical care transport.
The rolled-over vehicle contained two occupants who sustained significant injuries, Vucha said.
An adult male from the vehicle was flown by the helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital — Riverside in Rockford with critical injuries.
An adult female from the vehicle was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with serious injuries.
Vucha said an adult male driver of a pickup truck involved in the crash was transported to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with minor injuries.
Three additional occupants involved in the crash were evaluated by paramedics at the scene but declined further medical treatment.
The Marengo Fire & Rescue District received several additional unrelated calls throughout the district during the incident, all of which were handled by neighboring fire agencies, Vucha said.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, Union Fire Protection District, Huntley Fire Protection District, Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, Boone County Fire Protection District #2, Belvidere Fire Department and Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District assisted at the scene and covered calls in Marengo.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
