Multiple fire departments were called after a fire was reported at a laundromat in Winthrop Harbor but was quickly contained Saturday afternoon.

The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department and Zion Fire Rescue Department responded around 3:22 p.m. Saturday to Harbor Laundry, 1249 Sheridan Road, for a report of an appliance fire.

Zion firefighters arrived on the scene first and found smoke showing from the corner of the single-story strip mall.

The incident was upgraded to a working still alarm, which prompted a call for the Gurnee, Newport, Pleasant Prairie and Beach Park fire departments to respond.

Winthrop Harbor Fire Chief Rocco Campanella said the fire was in a dryer.

The fire was contained to the dryer and did not spread to the building, Campanella said.

The building did not sustain smoke damage and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and it is unknown if the business has been temporarily closed or not.
