Crews have officially completed work improving Aptakisic Road through Long Grove and Buffalo Grove after more than a decade of planning went into the road project.
The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) said the Aptakisic Road project was officially completed last week.
Fresh pavement is in place, road striping has been applied and the new traffic signals were turned on, marking the end of the project.
The project involved a 1.2-mile stretch of Aptakisic Road from Route 83 to Buffalo Grove Road.
Construction involved a five-lane roadway cross-section that includes two travel lanes in each direction, a road median with left-turn lanes, a new multi-use path on the north side of Aptakisic Road and a new sidewalk on the south side of Aptakisic Road.
Planning for the project began more than a decade ago following rising traffic demand and the lack of pedestrian and bicycle connectivity along the road.
After several public meetings and years of planning, designing and securing funding, the project was ready to be included in LCDOT’s construction program.
In May 2023, the Lake County Board approved the construction contract.
Construction took a season and a half seasons to complete and was finished on schedule.
The 1.2-mile stretch of Aptakisic Road was rebuilt from the ground up with new underground storm sewers to improve drainage, concrete curbs, asphalt pavement, traffic signals and guardrails.
A new sidewalk was constructed along with a new multi-use path located off-road.
Wider road shoulders were added to better accommodate on-road bikers.
