Police say a man died and a second person was injured after a car crashed into several trees and then struck another vehicle in a neighborhood in Lake Zurich Monday morning.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 11:30 a.m. Monday to Pheasant Ridge Drive and Old Mill Grove Road for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.
Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney said a preliminary investigation showed a 2016 Chrysler 200 was traveling eastbound on Pheasant Ridge Drive.
The Chrysler veered off the roadway, struck several trees and then struck a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, Gaffney said.
The driver of the Chrysler, a 72-year-old Lake Zurich man, was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where he was pronounced dead.
The passenger of the Chrysler was also transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for treatment, Gaffney said.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 22-year-old Lake Zurich resident, was uninjured.
The Village of Lake Zurich said the Old Mill Grove and Pheasant Ridge intersection was shut down due to the major crash.
“Please avoid the area and use alternate roads for the next couple of hours,” the village said in an alert to residents.
The Lake Zurich Police Department Traffic Safety Division and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is in the process of conducting an autopsy on the victim, whose identity is being temporarily withheld.
Gaffney said the cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Lake Zurich Police Department and MCAT.
