Felony charges have been filed against a driver accused of recklessly driving and causing a head-on crash on Randall Road in Algonquin that left two victims with serious injuries.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 9:43 p.m. on June 29 to the area of Randall Road and Harnish Drive for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Algonquin Police Department Sgt. Johnny Beltran said at the time that the crash involved two vehicles north of the intersection.
An investigation determined that a white sedan was traveling southbound on Randall Road from Bunker Hill Drive.
The white sedan lost control while traveling southbound and struck the curb, Beltran said.
The sedan then crossed over the center median, resulting in a head-on collision with a dark-colored SUV which was traveling northbound on Randall Road from Harnish Drive.
Beltran said a third vehicle was later learned to have received collateral damage as a result of the primary crash.
Both drivers of the first two vehicles were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The northbound and southbound lanes of Randall Road were shut down from Harnish Drive to Bunker Hill Drive for approximately four hours during the investigation, Beltran said.
The Algonquin Police Department and Kane County Crash Assistance Response Team (KCART) investigated the crash.
A grand jury on Thursday returned an indictment charging Avery J. Marty, 19, of Crystal Lake, with two counts of aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm, reckless driving, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
A criminal complaint said Marty was driving a vehicle with a “willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property” and caused the crash.
The complaint said Marty changed lanes without making sure the lane change could be made safely and also failed to decrease his speed to avoid colliding with the other vehicle.
One victim suffered a laceration to her spleen, which required the partial removal of her colon, as well as a rib fractures.
The second victim suffered a fractured arm and wrist.
A summons was issued for Marty to appear in court on January 10 for an arraignment hearing.
