A person suffered critical injuries and was left unresponsive after a head-on crash that shut down Route 14 for hours in Crystal Lake Monday afternoon.

The Crystal Lake Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 3:26 p.m. Monday to the area of Route 14 and Route 31.

Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Richard Neumann said officers arrived to find a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2015 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Route 14 from the area of Sands Road.

Neumann said the Honda, for an undetermined reason, entered the eastbound lane of Route 14 and struck a 2007 Jeep Commander.

Fire crews arrived and reported heavy damage involved with one person trapped in the wreckage.

One victim was unconscious and not breathing at the scene and lifesaving measures were performed, according to fire department radio traffic.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was initially requested but then canceled due to the victim’s condition.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry. Their current condition is unknown.

Officers shut down eastbound Route 14 near Route 31 for over four hours during the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department.
