The coroner has released the identity of a man who died from a medical event and crashed his car into several trees and another vehicle in a Lake Zurich neighborhood.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 11:30 a.m. Monday to Pheasant Ridge Drive and Old Mill Grove Road for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.
Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney said a preliminary investigation showed a 2016 Chrysler 200 was traveling eastbound on Pheasant Ridge Drive.
The Chrysler veered off the roadway, struck several trees and then struck a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, Gaffney said.
The driver of the Chrysler was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the driver on Thursday as Paul Anderson, 72, of Lake Zurich.
The passenger of the Chrysler was also transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for treatment, Gaffney said.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 22-year-old Lake Zurich resident, was uninjured.
The Village of Lake Zurich said the Old Mill Grove and Pheasant Ridge intersection was shut down due to the major crash.
“Please avoid the area and use alternate roads for the next couple of hours,” the village said in an alert to residents.
The Lake Zurich Police Department Traffic Safety Division and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.
An autopsy performed Thursday indicated Anderson suffered an “incapacitating medical event” that caused his death and resulted in the crash, Banek said.
Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said Anderson suffered a cardiac-related event.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake Zurich Police Department, Lake County Coroner’s Office and MCAT.
