The coroner has released the identity of a 19-year-old man from Zion who died after he was wounded in a shooting in Waukegan Sunday evening.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Sunday to the area of South Park Avenue and Water Street for a report of a shooting.

Officers were seen throughout the area investigating, with crime scene tape set up around the intersection near the South Park International convenience store.

Police were also seen on Washington Street at West Street.

Paramedics transported a victim to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

Newton said the victim suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced in the hospital’s emergency room.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said Thursday that the victim was identified as Christopher Tapia, 19, of Zion.

An autopsy was completed on Tapia on Monday morning which confirmed he died from a single gunshot wound, Banek said.

According to fire department radio traffic, a second person was possibly shot in the incident as well and two ambulances were called to the scene.

Police officials said Monday they would release details on the case but as of Friday, no information had been released.
