A man died and another man was injured after an apparent head-on crash resulted in major damage and shut down Barnard Mill Road near Wonder Lake Friday afternoon.

A Wonder Lake Fire Protection District ambulance came across a crash around 12:25 p.m. Friday on Barnard Mill Road north of Summit Drive in unincorporated Wonder Lake.

Wonder Lake Fire Chief Mike Weber said the two-vehicle crash resulted in major damage.

The Richmond Fire Protection District and McHenry Township Fire Protection District were called to assist.

A small black car came to rest off of the roadway and a white Chevrolet pickup truck remained on the roadway, Weber said.

A medical helicopter was placed on standby but was unavailable due to weather conditions.

Firefighters extricated the driver of the black car, an adult male, from the car.

He was unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead, Weber said.

The driver of the Chevrolet, also an adult male, was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.

His condition was unknown but he was walking at the scene, Weber said.

Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles. Weber said it was unclear who was at fault based on the way the vehicles came to rest.

The Wonder Lake Police Department assisted with traffic control. The roadway was shut down for approximately three hours.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District covered Wonder Lake’s fire station during the incident.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
