The sheriff says a driver exited the roadway and overcorrected, causing his truck to roll over and leaving him ejected with critical injuries, on Route 14 near Harvard.
The Harvard Fire Protection District, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry County Conservation District Police responded around 5:56 p.m. Friday to the 9500 block of Route 14 in unincorporated Harvard for a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash.
Harvard Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said first responders found a heavily damaged pickup truck overturned on its side.
Debris from the crash was scattered across the front yard of a home.
An adult male was discovered outside the vehicle after apparently being ejected during the crash, Vucha said.
Mercyhealth MD-1, an emergency physician response unit, was called to the scene.
Vucha said paramedics and MD-1 began lifesaving measures at the scene by providing advanced medical care.
A medical helicopter was initially requested but poor visibility caused by rain and heavy fog prevented the helicopter from safely responding.
The critically injured victim was transported by ambulance to Javon Bea Hospital — Riverside in Rockford, Vucha said.
The sheriff’s office said Monday that a preliminary investigation showed that the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Route 14.
The Chevrolet exited the roadway to the west and appeared to overcorrect, causing the vehicle to travel across the roadway and exit the roadway to the east.
The Chevrolet continued to travel across a residential yard and came to rest on its side, sheriff’s officials said.
The driver, a 39-year-old Harvard man, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected.
The sheriff’s office said the car’s airbags did not deploy. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Route 14 was shut down in both directions from Oak Grove Road to Yates Road for several hours during the investigation.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit continues to actively investigate the crash.
