Employees and firefighters are being credited for their quick action in stopping a fire from causing significant damage at The Salvation Army in Waukegan.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 3:10 p.m. Friday to The Salvation Army Store and Donation Center, 431 South Genesee Street, for a report of a structure fire.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said crews arrived to find light smoke from the rear garage truck dock area.

The fire was confined in a trash compactor dumpster.

Zupec said the fire had not spread from the compactor to the building.

Fire crews, with the help of the employees, were able to remove the dumpster from the interior garage area.

Firefighters fully extinguished the fire in the container after it was removed, Zupec said.

No damage to the interior of the building was reported and no one was injured.

“Quick action by both the employees and the Fire Department prevented this fire from spreading and causing significant damage,” Zupec said.
