Scattered snow showers on New Year’s Day resulted in snow-covered roads in parts of Lake County and the Chicagoland area, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said scattered snow showers would affect the Chicago metro area Wednesday morning.
The snow is mainly affecting Chicago and the northern suburbs, including Lake County.
The NWS said that the heavier snow showers could produce a quick coating to a half inch of snow, resulting in untreated roads to become slippery.
“Use caution traveling this morning,” the weather service said around 8:20 a.m.
The snow was expected through around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Motorists were urged to slow and increase their following distance.
A multiple-vehicle crash with injuries was reported at Midlothian Road and Hawley Street in Mundelein around 9 a.m.
One person was reported to be trapped in a car and three ambulances were called to the scene.
A single-vehicle crash was reported a short time later at Grand Avenue and Cedar Lake Road in Lake Villa.
The NWS said 2025 will come in “feeling much more like winter” following an unseasonably mild end to 2024.
“Highs will generally be in the 20s through the upcoming weekend with some snow expected mainly near and south of I-88 Thursday afternoon and evening. Another chance for snow is in the forecast for Sunday into Monday,” the weather service said.
