The coroner has released the identity of a Grayslake man who was fatally struck by a train in Waukegan Thursday morning, resulting in extensive Metra delays.

An autopsy performed Thursday afternoon showed Matthew Ahern, 40, of Grayslake, died as a result of blunt force injuries, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 8:44 a.m. Thursday south of the intersection of South Avenue and Market Street in Waukegan for a report of a pedestrian struck by a train.

A Metra spokesperson said the pedestrian, later identified as Ahern, was struck by Metra Train #322 near Oakwood Cemetery in Waukegan just north of North Chicago.

Ahern suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Newton said.

The Metra Police Department was called to the scene to conduct an investigation.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was also called to the scene.

Metra reported inbound and outbound train movement was halted on the Union Pacific North line in the area due to the incident.

Extensive delays were reported as Train #322 remained stopped at the scene.

A bus was sent to the area for customers at North Chicago and Waukegan, Metra said.

Metra and the coroner’s office said it is unknown yet whether the incident was accidental or intentional and the investigation continues.
