A man has been sentenced to probation after prosecutors say he endangered another man when he accidentally shot himself while riding in a car in Grayslake.
Jesus Caballero-Carrera, 35, of Round Lake Beach, was charged in April 2023 with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony, and carrying or possessing a firearm in a bar, a Class 4 felony.
He was processed on the warrant at the Lake County Jail in July 2023 and released after posting bond.
Court records show Caballero-Carrera was accused of recklessly discharging a firearm on December 23, 2022, in Grayslake.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Francis DeRosa said at the time that Caballero-Carrera was riding in a vehicle with another man that day.
Attorney George Gomez said Caballero-Carrera, who he represented, was with his friend in the car.
One of the men reached for a cell phone when Caballero-Carrera accidentally shot himself, Gomez said.
DeRosa said during an initial court hearing alcohol was involved in the incident but did not provide further information on how exactly the gun was fired.
Court records show Caballero-Carrera entered into a negotiated plea deal with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office last month.
He pleaded guilty to one count of carrying or possessing a firearm in a bar, a Class 4 felony.
Caballero-Carrera was placed on first-time weapon offender probation, which a judge approved. His conviction will not be entered onto his record if he complies with the terms successfully.
Caballero-Carrera will be on probation for 24 months, was ordered not to consume alcohol or drugs, not possess weapons and submit to 100 hours of public service.
