
Firefighters responded to two separate fires that damaged homes in Waukegan three days apart but fire crews were able to extinguish the fires before they caused serious damage.
The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to the 2700 block of West Greenwood Avenue for a report of a structure fire.
Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from a garage.
The garage was attached to a single-family home and crews began an offensive attack to extinguish the fire.
The occupants were home at the time but escaped without injury.
The fire was confined to the garage and did not extend into the living quarters of the home.
The occupants were able to remain living in the home despite the damage to the garage. A damage estimate was not provided.
Investigators believe the fire started from a wood-burning stove in the garage.
The Waukegan Fire Department and Newport Fire Protection District responded around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to the 3300 block of Victoria Lane for a report of a structure fire.
The fire was reported to 911 by a neighbor who saw it.
Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the chimney on the side of the house.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire and prevent it from extended into the home.
All occupants and pets were able to evacuate without suffering injury.
The occupants were able to remain living in the home following the incident. Damage was estimated at $15,000.
