Two dogs escaped unharmed after a passerby spotted a large home on fire in Trout Valley near Cary where there are no nearby fire hydrants, prompting a large fire department response.

The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 2:25 p.m. Wednesday to the 0-100 block of Marryat Road in Trout Valley for a report of a structure fire.

Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said firefighters arrived to find a large two-story residence with significant flames showing from the north side of the home.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported by a passerby who noticed the flames.

Vucha said the area does not have fire hydrants and rural water operations were established at the roadway.

Water had to be shuttled to the scene to support firefighting efforts.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 25 minutes, Vucha said.

Firefighters entered the home to conduct thorough searches to ensure no occupants were inside after the initial fire was extinguished.

Crews also worked to cut holes in the roof to check for fire extension and to exhaust heat from the attic space. “These operations were critical in containing the fire and preventing further spread,” Vucha said.

Firefighters remained on the scene for an additional hour to ensure the fire had not extended further into the home, as well as to perform overhaul operations and conduct an investigation.

Vucha said two dogs were inside the residence but escaped unharmed. No injuries were reported to any people.
