Firefighters saved a dog after residents were awoken to a fire that left their home uninhabitable in Ingleside early Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 5:01 a.m. Thursday to the 36400 block of North Tamarack Lane in Ingleside for a report of a structure fire.

Fox Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Larry VanHoorelbeke said firefighters arrived to find a two-story, single-family home with heavy flames coming from the roof of the attached garage.

One of the residents woke up and saw smoke in the residence and was able to evacuate everyone.

The residents escaped without injuries but a dog remained in the home when firefighters arrived, VanHoorelbeke said.

Fire crews began performing fire suppression and conducting searches.

VanHoorelbeke said the dog was located inside the residence and rescued by firefighters. It was uninjured.

The fire was brought under control within 40-45 minutes.

A gas meter also caught fire and crews had to wait for Nicor Gas to respond to shut off the gas, VanHoorelbeke said.

The fire was mostly contained to the garage except for a small portion that spread to the attic. Two vehicles in the garage were both damaged.

The home was deemed uninhabitable, VanHoorelbeke said. No firefighters were injured.

Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly four hours. VanHoorelbeke said investigators are still in the process of investigating.

The Lake Villa, Antioch, Round Lake, Spring Grove, McHenry and Grayslake fire departments assisted at the scene. The Richmond and Wauconda fire departments covered Fox Lake’s fire station.

A damage estimate was not immediately available and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
