A 59-year-old man has died in the hospital after he was hit by an SUV while walking in a neighborhood on Waukegan’s west side, authorities said.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 5:10 p.m. on December 2 to the area of Hyde Park Ave and Oakwood Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived and found a collision between a pedestrian and a silver Honda CR-V, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain.

The driver, a 55-year-old Gurnee man, remained at the scene and called 911, Chastain said.

Paramedics transported the adult male victim to a local hospital.

He was later transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said the victim died in the hospital on Monday — over a month following the crash.

The office identified the man as Douglas Wardell, 59, of Park City.

An autopsy showed Wardell died as a result of head injuries from being struck by the vehicle. His death was ruled an accident.

Chastain said the driver of the Honda had a blood alcohol content of 0 and there were no signs of impairment.

The driver told police he did not see the pedestrian because it was dark outside.
