Multiple people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash caused by a drunk driver resulted in major damage and left one car rolled over on Interstate 94 near Wadsworth.
The Gurnee Fire Department, Newport Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 3:50 a.m. Saturday to Interstate 94 at the 5.75 milepost near Wadsworth for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews reported two vehicles were involved in the crash south of Wadsworth Road in the westbound lanes of Interstate 94 and both sustained major damage.
One of the cars, which had two occupants, rolled over in the ditch on the right shoulder.
Three ambulances were requested to the scene. Firefighters had to extricate a female who was trapped in the wreckage, which took approximately 20 minutes.
A spokesperson for the Illinois State Police (ISP) said multiple occupants were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two of the occupants were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and two were transported to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital. A fifth person declined medical treatment.
Troopers arrested Dale D. Williams, 42, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who was the driver of the at-fault vehicle, ISP Said.
Williams was charged with driving under the influence, driving too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
“This investigation is still in its infancy and there is no further information available at this time,” the ISP spokesperson said.
