A teenager escaped unharmed after a fire left a car a total loss and completely shut down Route 14 in Cary for two hours Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 4:02 p.m. Monday to the intersection of Cary Algonquin Road and Northwest Highway for a report of a vehicle crash.

Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said firefighters arrived and found a two-door sedan with heavy flames coming from the engine compartment.

The car was located in the median on Route 14, also known as Northwest Highway, just east of the intersection with Cary Algonquin Road.

Fire crews quickly determined the incident was not a crash but actually a single-vehicle fire, Vucha said.

Firefighters quickly deployed a hose line and contained the fire to the engine compartment.

The driver, a teenage male, was able to exit the vehicle before the fire spread and was unharmed, Vucha said. The vehicle was considered a total loss.

Route 14 was shut down in both directions for nearly two hours while fire crews worked to ensure the area was safe and cleared.

The roadway iced over quickly due to the firefighting efforts and air temperatures being in the teens.

Salt trucks were called to the scene to treat the slick road conditions.
