Firefighters battled a fire in frigid temperatures that left residents displaced after their residence was deemed uninhabitable near McHenry Tuesday evening.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday to the 5900 block of Fox Lake Road in unincorporated McHenry for a report of a structure fire.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ryan Mastandrea said fire crews arrived on the scene within seven minutes to find an active house fire.

Flames were coming from the rear of the one-story residence.

All residents had evacuated from the home before firefighters arrived, Mastandrea said.

Fire crews upgraded the incident to a working fire response, which brought in additional units to the scene and to cover McHenry fire stations.

Mastandrea said crews were hampered by a live power line that came down in the rear of the home.

The area does not have fire hydrants and water had to be shuttled into the scene using fire department water tender trucks.

The fire was brought under control within 35 minutes. No residents or firefighters were injured.

The house has been deemed uninhabitable due to the damage, Mastandrea said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Temperatures were in the single digits at the time of the fire. Water used to extinguish the fire caused icy conditions on the roadway and a salt truck was called to the scene.

The Round Lake, Spring Grove and Wonder Lake fire departments assisted at the scene. The McHenry County Rehab Canteen also responded.
